Jimmy: Thanks Boss
Me: Did you call me Boss? Is that how you're trained to speak to customers?
Jimmy is left with a blank look on his dumb, insolent face.

It's not brilliant, but I've used it a couple of times. I've come to the conclusion that people who address others as 'boss' aren't particularly bright. A spell at boot camp might be the answer....

I read the whole thing and I'm impressed with your deep insights Ryan. It means so much to you to have that little girl in your life and for some reason it made you feel a little bit scared or overwhelmed as it's a big commitment to be an uncle. No worries though: you can handle it just great. This little girl is also a part of you, she carries some of your genes as well. And those are great ones! Maybe she can even sing and have a great voice like you. All you can do is to be yourself, perfectly as you are and share yourself, your love and your experiences with her. Just stay alive so she can get to know you:-)
I also know how you feel about having an older brother. I adore my older sister and seeing her getting married was a big thing to me. I felt so emotional and so happy to see my beautiful sister with her loved one. I can't even imagine how it would feel to be an auntie. I would have to cry a lot to let all those feelings out. Crying from happiness, experiencing pure feelings is the best though..

It's very encouraging to hear that others are having good experiences at this gym. I know at least one person who helped create Twisters and he happens to be a climber that I have a lot of respect for so it does not surprise me when I hear about talented young climbers getting their start there. Perhaps my initial reaction was a bit harsh, but I felt bad for the others in the group who had no climbing experience and simply did not feel like the gym was as safe as I have come to expect.

So for the casual Bay Area resident who's interested in trying out climbing for the first time my recommendation is still to visit one of the Planet Granite gyms. But if you already have a love for the sport, know how to climb safely and want to get serious about training, perhaps Twisters is worth looking into.

Sounds like you came on the wrong day. Weekends are not the preferred time to visit this gym. Weeknights are as their two USAC certified competitive coaches stay late into the night setting top routes and having a great time teaching adults as well as kids how to climb. Come back on a day when they are there and you will certainly have a better time than this!

Thanks for posting. I too have about one-year of climbing experience, and, I often get caught up with improving my grade. Your story reminds me (and others, I'm sure) that progressing too quickly is potentially dangerous. Similar to how we double-check our anchors, maybe we need to also double-check our egos.

Cheers and wish you a strong recovery.

Close one, huh? I had a similar, but maybe not as serious experience about a year ago. I was playing rugby and got a concussion. I lost memory of about 15 minutes on either side of the event. I went to the ER and had a CT scan on my brain, and it was uncomfortably inconclusive. I sat around for another 5 hours for another CT to see if my brain was hemorrhaging and whether I needed immediate surgery. Turns out my head was fine, but those 5 hours were really not fun.

I hope all is better or at least getting there.

Ryan,
Well, after getting my heart out of my throat and wiping away some tears I guess I would have to say, "Whew"! Stay confident, look at all the possibilities but never bet the store. A sure thing is remembering who you are and how you got where you are at a given moment. There are a lot of roads on the map.

Ryan,
This is why once I am in to a book I read the last chapter before going back and finishing the read. Even now, I know how it ends and it still has enormous affects on me. I'm to impatient and would not make a good or safe climber.

Hey cool article! Came across it because I'm also having the problem with the Shure SM57's sensitivity when wired into my Microtrack II -- i'm trying to use it for things like voice and acoustic sound effects. Good to know that my Microtrack isn't faulty.

The microtrack's a quirky little thing. Like, if you have the hold switch active the battery drains, but it won't otherwise. I find it weird that there is so little information on the Microtrack in a consolidated place. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion about the akg C1000S, although at $200 it's a little pricey for me right now.

Thanks again!

The microtrack’s a quirky little thing. Like, if you have the hold switch active the battery drains, but it won’t otherwise. I find it weird that there is so little information on the Microtrack in a consolidated place. Anyway, thanks for the suggestion about the akg C1000S, although at $200 it’s a little pricey for me right now.

Thanks again!

This is absolutely hilarious, Ryan.

When I was little I thought Lease was a spoiled little girl. I got this impression when the toy store a block down displayed in its window what I thought was a giant gift tag proclaiming, "For Lease". I couldn't believe someone bought an entire toy store for their kid! Then I saw the tags pop up in other places, too. And, although it was strange that Lease had a propensity for chain restaurants, it took me way too long to figure out that Lease was not just a very lucky little girl. And while I was incredibly jealous the entire time I thought she was getting all the toy stores and fast food joints her little heart desired, I was a little sad when I learned the truth. That I would never be as lucky as little Lease because she didn't exist. Nobody buys their children entire toy stores and definitely wouldn't feel the need to set them up with a run down Pizza Hut. When I figured this out I felt kind of like a set of underlined dashes.

Thanks for making me laugh!!!

Think about it, Great Clips is a mass marketed low budget clipper joint who runs coupons for rock bottom prices and herds their customers in like cattle. They do time their haircuts. The stylist has to move quickly - with a 14 minute deadline on each cut. Quality is not the main focus, money is. Now, while you complain about your stylist...think about who would be willing to work for a massive nationwide corporation with so little regard for their employees as to pay them minimum wage, with promises of big tips - which never arrive - most are 1.00 to 5.00 at best. The whole concept does not attract the type of clientele that by nature are big tippers. Most stylists learn this early and eventually move on to a higher end salon with higher end clientele. Therefore you will always have high turnover in these salons. The company's marketing strategy is to bring people in based on a price point. The people who think they can get a good haircut for 6.99 are dreaming. A person who is concerned about their appearance will not risk ruining their hair in a cheap establishment such as one who claims to be able to provide a quality cut for less than 10.00. The type of stylist you will encounter in this company are those fresh out of beauty school for the most part who have no practical training or experience. When Great Clips runs these ad campaigns with cheap prices they bring in the bottom of the barrel type people who have not cut their hair in months, some even have serious scalp conditions which make you want to gag when you have to work with it. Bottom line is, if you want a quality haircut go to a quality company and be prepared to pay a quality price. Only then will you have room to complain or a leg to stand on.

Hi Meyrick,

Thanks for the kind words, I'm glad you enjoyed the post.

Because the SM57 is a dynamic microphone it doesn't require any power to operate so you should probably leave the phantom power off. Typically the phantom power is needed when using condenser mics. The <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Microphone" rel="nofollow">wikipedia article on microphones</a> has a good explanation of how various types differ and what their strong points are.

The video that's in this post actually uses the audio that I recorded so that should give you a good idea of the results that I had with the SM57. However, the reason that it turned out at all is because I was quite close to a very loud source. For recording unplugged acoustic sets you'll get much better results with a condenser mic. Maybe take a look at the AKG C1000S, you can get them used for around $100 and they operate on phantom power between 9 and 52 volts.

Best of luck and I hope that helps.

Hi Ryan, thanks for the excellent article.

I'm in a similar position to you, having recently bought an SM57 to use in conjunction with the Microtrack. However, I've got the earlier version of this, where phantom power is only up to 30v, and some problems are associated with it.

Was wondering if you had to use phantom power to work the SM57 in your recordings or not? What did they sound like without phantom power? I'm mainly going to be recording unplugged, acoustic musicians, and for ease and flexibility I'd like to do this with the Microtrack.

Any tips, tricks, wisdom you'd like to share much appreciated.

Thanks

I also use the Great Clips for my hair. They seem to cope well with numbers (.5in increments).
Nice summary, Ryan. I'm glad you were able to get so close to the stage for Jack Johnson (as expected, we ended up pretty far away - I watched the spider dialogue through the large screen - too funny). I think the highlight of my day was Broken Social Scene and Andrew Bird - I wish I had been able to get closer to the stage for Wilco. But I think the festival was great success! I am sure it will be back next year.

I estimate I was about a mile away from the stage. They were really good. But I can't say worth-the-ticket good. I may as well have been listening to them in my living room.

Hi Ryan,

Thanks for the post. Last weekend my friend and I went along the same route. It was a very nice route and we enjoyed it except for the climbing :-). Doing it in 5 and 1/2 hours is really good. We took close to 7 hours without taking the Big Basin route back.

Evan those are without a doubt some good questions. I can't help but wonder exactly where you ask people these questions. I figure it has to be one of three places, either waiting at the bus stop, while riding the bus on the way to Denny's or at Denny's. Do you find that you get different answers from different locations? (Sorry, I also couldn't resit :).

Great article Ryan, here are some more insightful questions to ask:

Why are the Die Hard movies better than the Lethal Weapon movies?

What type of mental deficiency do you have if you don't love the Die Hard movies?

What Die Hard character will you name your first born son after?

If I give you a 5 gallon water jug and a 3 gallon jug, why is Die Hard 3 the greatest movie ever made?

Oh that is hilarious, it never ceases to amaze me how frequently Die Hard comes up around you and Evan.

However delusional both of you are in regards to the third movie in that series (which was on TNT tonight actually), you've managed to redeem yourself with some fantastic questions. I may start stealing them.

I love those questions.

Here's some questions along those lines that I like:

What's you're favorite pizza?

If you were "god", where/how would you hide the secrets to life?

What was the last thing that made you cry? In public?

Why do the Die Hard movies suck/rock? [Sorry, couldn't resist.]

If you could only pass on one bit of wisdom to the future, what would it be?

Rock on,
John
